Tiles that WoW!

When it comes to decorating and designing spaces, many overlook the impact of tile on the finished project. There is a limited budget and the choice is made to spend the money on cabinetry or appliances, for example, but to cheap out on the tiles. Budgetary constraints are understandable, but no one has ever said that the same tile must be used throughout a space. In fact, a simple hint of tile can be more dramatic than using the same tile throughout.  Select a tile you LOVE and use it as an accent — in the backsplash, around the shower, as a border on the floor… you are limited only by your imagination.

A couple of New York-based companies have gorgeous, unique tile designs: Artistic Tile and Ann Sacks. (Both are shown above.  There are certainly many others, but I love some of the new product offerings from these two.)

Important to note is that you can add dimension and drama without adding colour, as exhibited by these tone-on-tone designs, below.

Caesarstone USA’s Color Pop-Up Tour Makes a Splash in Seaport, N.Y.

April 19, 2012 by Susan

caesarstone1 Caesarstone USAs Color Pop Up Tour Makes a Splash in Seaport, N.Y.

Caesarstone USA, Inc. made the first of several stops on their Color Pop-Up Tour in Seaport, New York hosting a two-day event in honor of their 17 new colors on April 4th and 5th. Consumers, trade partners, and industry leaders were among the guests invited to share this unique and innovative experience. Several well-knowns from the designer/architect community as well as social media experts were guest speakers at the 7 events held throughout the 2 days. At the center of it all was the huge, lighted Caesarstone dome which provided a truly exceptional space for event guests to gather against the New York City skyline and waterfront and made quite an impression on the attendees and passersby. The interior, designed by architect Dan Brunn, incorporated huge slabs of the new Caesarstone colors, as well as featured the 17 winning mood boards of the LUXE Interiors + Design “SET THE MOOD” inspiration board design challenge.

“Caesarstone’s first POP UP Color Tour was incredible in every way. We positioned Caesarstone as truly a leader, unique and innovative in everything we do — from innovating new colors, to our new ad campaign, to embracing social media to our spectacular POP UP Color Tour. The positive feedback and respect we got from all visitors can’t be described in words. This is a new era for our industry. This is where we shine as a company — we defined new game rules that set us apart from all others,” commented Sagi Cohen – CEO, Caesarstone USA, Inc.

While the 8 latest Classico colors (Shitake, Linen, Wild Rice, Late Autumn, Wild Rocks, Belgian Moon, Haze, and Atlantic Salt) have been on the market for some time, the new beautifully textured White Crocodile in the Motivo line, and the 8 colors in the recently launched and elegantly patterned Supremo line took center stage. In fact, Caesarstone’s new ad campaign is centered on the Supremo series. On Day 1, the “Supremo Girls” were unveiled — 3 stunning 10′x5′ artistic slabs showcasing the unique colors and patterns of Supremo using patented technology exclusive only to Caesarstone.

“A gorgeous brand like Caesarstone needed an equally beautiful campaign to launch their newest and most prestigious line. I think we gave that to them in our idea for Supremo. We simply used the surface itself as the inspiration for our mysterious portraits that reflect the potential costumers themselves. Because any surface, especially a Supremo surface, is a reflection of the customer and his or her desires. In the end Caesarstone isn’t just selling kitchen counters, what they are really doing is creating surfaces that add to the pageant of one’s life,” said Joe Kayser – CCO, Y&R:CA

After the Press Conference, AIA continuing education course, luncheon with Caesarstone’s Director of Business Development Ed Rogers, and mood board reveal, Day 1 turned into night kicking off with the LUXE Interiors + Design Opening Party. Hundreds were in attendance, including TV personality Ty Pennington. Day 2 featured a luncheon, NKBA continuing education course, fabricators appreciation event with Stone World, and closing event with House Beautiful’s Sean Sullivan and Kate Kelly Smith, and a social media presentation by Eqal’s Ashley Richardson.

“The vision that I had for the ‘POP UP Color Tour’ was one that created an experience that touched all of the senses. It’s easy to talk about branding and what the brand means, but what I wanted to achieve and to present was something with depth and dimension, something that could be felt and explored. I wanted to allow our partners, consumers and industry experts an opportunity to really experience Caesarstone and to walk away with a connection to us and understanding of why we are the industry leader,” said, Karen Schakarov – Vice President, Marketing Caesarstone USA, Inc.

Caesarstone has yet to announce their next stop on the Color Pop-Up Tour, though it is sure to be an innovating and awe-inspiring experience from the well-established global leader in the quartz industry. So keep an eye out for the Caesarstone dome, perhaps coming to a city near you.

Project: Green Idea House Part 2

April 19, 2012 by Susan

Green Idea House1 Project: Green Idea House Part 2

StonePeak is excited to be a part of a new case study showcasing the latest and greatest eco-friendly construction material designed for sustainability and energy efficiency.  The Green Idea House is a 2,100 square foot home that is being remodeled to give it a modern look that says it is possible to be both environmentally sensitive and beautiful.

The house is being used in a long term case study put on by Southern California Edison to measure the effects of green products on energy consumption.  The great thing about this project is they are using affordable products in a replicable design, so the concept can be reused with similar costs to standard housing.

The owners of the house are not developers, architects, or manufacturers, but actually the family that will be living there.  While making the selection for their “green” house they were strictly looking to partner with businesses that are engaged in sustainable activities.

“We want materials that will stand the test of time and hold up for our active family. The selection process was made easier because of the wide variety of sizes StonePeak has to offer,” said house owner Monica Fortunato.

Upon their search they found that StonePeak exemplified these qualities and decided to install our tile in two of their rooms:

  • For the upstairs bathroom The Green Idea House will feature Light Splendor from the Cesare Magnus collection.

“We chose from the Cesare collection because the color variation in the tile is one of the most beautiful tiles we have seen.”

  • For the downstairs laundry room they will have Cloudsky from the Sky collection.

“We chose from the sky collection for our laundry and downstairs bath because of the thru-color and beauty of the tile.”

The Green Idea House will be holding tours of the house for the next three years, including The Solar Tour and the Earth Day Tour, along with several green building workshops.

During these tours you can speak with an Energy Upgrade California contractor and learn how you can:

  •  Save money
  • Increase energy and water efficiency
  • Live more comfortably in your home
  • Get up to *8,000 in rebates and incentives from Energy Upgrade California in Los Angeles
GIHlogo Project: Green Idea House Part 2

How it’s Done

The tours will showcase the innovative technologies that make the Green Idea House net zero energy, zero carbon and responsive to the environment in terms of water, waste, and toxicity.

The concept of a net zero house is to harvest as much energy as you use.  With the state of California attempting to make all new residence net zero by 2020, the question arose in Robert Fortunato’s mind, “How are we going to get there?  Can we get there?  Let’s build it today!”

Picture40 e1272059677482 Project: Green Idea House Part 2

One of the key features of the Green Idea House is a massive overhang pointing south.  While the appearance may seem odd at first glance, the functionality of it is quite genius.  Simply put, during the summer months when the sun is high, the overhang will help shade the house helping it keep cool.  The opposite effect occurs during the winter months as when the sun is low; its rays will come in below the overhang penetrating large windows, thus helping to heat the house.  By using an air to water heat exchange they are able to harvest the ambient air from the garage and use it to help heat the rest of the house.  This effortless process can help with up to 50% of the energy it takes to heat and cool a standard house.

“The Green Idea House is like a stone soup,” Robert remarked.  “When everyone contributes it’s amazing what can happen.”

We will keep you updated with pictures and information as the house becomes complete.

Space Planning 101

April 13, 2012 by Susan

by MeCC Interiors

p004 Space Planning 101

Kitchen designed by MeCC Interiors Inc.

Most design professionals have certain guidelines or rules of thumb they use when planning spaces for clients. The NKBA (National Kitchen and Bathroom Association) and Design Works, Inc. decided to formalize it into writing, answering many frequently asked client questions in the process. Here is a cheat sheet.

Kitchen

The odds are high that you’ve at least heard reference made to the Kitchen work triangle — the placement of the sink, fridge, and stove / cooktop.  The “rules” state that the triangle should not exceed 26′-0″ feet in length, and no single side of the triangle should be less than 4′-0″.  (Larger kitchens may have multiple work triangles.)

Countertops should be at least 24″ deep and allow for at least 15″ of clearance.  Ideally, there should also be a minimum of 15″ wide countertop spaces between appliances, e.g. the fridge and the cooktop, so that you have a place to set down food and/or dishes.  If you are adding in an island, you want a minimum of 3′-0″ between the main cabinets and the island.

Bathrooms

If you are renovating or planning a space from scratch, you’ll find that some of the clearances are more pronounced now than they may have been when the room was last updated.  You want to allow for at least 30″ of unobstructed floor space in front of all fixtures — toilet, bidet, tub, shower, lavatory.  If you have the luxury of multiple sinks, the centreline between the sinks should be a minimum of 3′-0″.

Living Room
If your preference is for cozy, your conversation area should be approximately 8′-0″ across; this will enable comfortable conversation and easy access to coffee and/or side tables to everyone in the group.  If you like a little more space, increase the area to about 10′-0″ across.  Of course, if you’re blessed with a large, open concept area, remember that you can always create multiple conversation areas that can be combined for larger gatherings.  Conversely, if your space is small and you feel you are unable to use an ottoman and/or coffee table, be assured that an 18″ path between seating and low objects is sufficient for walking.

lr dr Space Planning 101

Dining Room designed by MeCC Interiors Inc.

Dining Room
You need about 2′-0″ of space per person for comfortable eating.  (This applies to kitchen breakfast bars, too.  A 4′-0″ counter is not designed for three (3) people, so do not even try.)  Ideally, if people will be walking behind diners, you want to allow for a corridor of at least 44″.   If access is not an issue and it is simple a matter of people pushing chairs in and out, there should be 3′-0″ of clearance behind dining chairs.

If you like to entertain and need to determine the size of table to purchase, think of the number of people you will need to accommodate and multiply that by the requisite 2′-0″ of space per person.  If you commonly host ten (10) people, your table should have a perimeter of at least 240″ or 20′-0″.

When it comes to selecting the optimal chandelier, consider the size of your table.  The general rule is to hang the chandelier so that it is about 6″ from the edge of the table.  Whether your table is round, rectangular, ovular, or square, that means measuring the width of the table and subtracting 12″.  For example, if your table is 54″ wide, look for a chandelier that is 42″ wide.

 Space Planning 101

Bedroom designed by MeCC Interiors Inc.

Bedroom

Smaller bedrooms are often dwarfed by their beds and that cannot always be prevented.  However, be sure to leave adequate room to walk and access storage pieces.  There should be a minimum 30″ in front of dressers, night tables, or armoires so that they can be comfortably opened.  If you can leave more space, do.  Unless you have a walk-in closet, aim for 4′-0″ of open floor space in front of your closet for dressing room.

How to start an eco-friendly kitchen

April 9, 2012 by Susan

by Ryan Hirst

how to start an ecofriendly kitchen. 1024x804 How to start an eco friendly kitchen

We see the term “eco-friendly” tagged alongside pretty much everything nowadays, but what does it really mean?  To me it describes things related to helping the environment in some way – whether it’s a grand gesture or a simple change in habits, anything that can help the environment in some way can make you eco-friendly.

When we talk about eco-friendly things to do in the kitchen the possibilities are endless, and as the kitchen is supposedly the most used room in the modern home I decided to spend some time researching what people think are the best ideas to make them more eco-friendly –  these are the results of what I found:

Reduce, Re-Use, and Recycle!

The first, and most obvious, way to help the environment is to recycle as much as you can in while cooking in the kitchen. Most things that are recyclable pass through the kitchen at some point, so the easiest place to start is set up a couple of recycling bins in the kitchen.  Use some nice looking baskets or simple plastic bins, to separate your glass, plastic newspapers and aluminium.

There are typically colour-coded bins for recycling and composting so that various products to be split, making it even easier to empty the bins from the kitchen into the appropriate coloured wheelie bin.  In my research I read about a lot of families with young children who make it a task for each family member gets allocated a bin colour and they look after taking it out and recycling which is a great idea!

Compost bins!

Breakfast, lunch and dinner is all made in the kitchen, and general creation of food involves some sort of throw away food product – things like vegetable peel, leftover food, bits of food that we would maybe wouldn’t eat but they are still classed as food product.  All of these items can be used as compost for your garden. Basically if you store these food products in a pile, or compost bin in the corner of your garden in about 10-12months it will turn to great fertilizer to mix into soil for your plants and flowers – and best of all its free!

Food Preparation

Food storage and preparation gives many opportunities to help better the environment.  When buying your fruit and veg from shops buy them loose instead of shrink wrapped to save on having to dispose of the plastic at home. Buy food fresh instead of ready meals – less packaging and nothing uses as much energy in a kitchen than a microwave!  As mentioned earlier, use old baskets to add character to your kitchen for recycling bins, but you can also reuse boxes for storage in your cupboards – things like herbs, rice, or other packets of food.

Make the most use of natural light

When possible try and position worktops and sinks in front of windows so when you are chopping and creating you can see what you are doing without the need for extra light.  Sky lights or glass roofing areas are great ways to add natural light to a kitchen – try and position them over areas that you use the most.

Obviously it’s not always possible to remodel a kitchen easily with windows and sky lights, so if you are in a position where you have to use a light make sure it’s an energy saving bulb as it more convenient (less changes) and as it last longer, saves more money over running a traditional bulb.

Other light related tips include always turning the light off when you leave the room, or having multiple lighting switches for a variety of lighting areas meaning you only light up the area you need and not always the whole room.

Replace white goods with A ratings

Washing machines, dishwashers, fridges and freezers are all energy hungry devices we all have in our kitchens, but did you know that when you buy them they all have economy ratings attached to them? If it’s a little bit more to buy the A rated white goods then it should save you money over the years to come on the amount of energy it uses to be powered.

Obviously it’s not always easy to just go and replace them all in one go to try and be eco-friendly, but chances are you will be replacing one of them over the next few years so always try and have a look for the most energy efficient one in your budget as appose to how it looks!

Does Anyone Offer Affordable Kitchen Renovations?

April 2, 2012 by Susan

MG 9892 Does Anyone Offer Affordable Kitchen Renovations?

Many homeowners look at a kitchen renovation project as an expensive and time-consuming process that requires complete replacement of an existing kitchen. The reason they see renovating in this light is because a complete kitchen renovation can be expensive and take several weeks.

A more affordable option? Make upgrades to your kitchen instead.

Several kitchen upgrade options exist as more affordable kitchen renovations that can provide you with the style of kitchen you want without emptying your pocketbook.

MG 9914 Does Anyone Offer Affordable Kitchen Renovations?

Cabinets

Instead of replacing your cabinets, consider refacing them with natural wood or laminate. Cabinet refacing offers home and business owners who don’t want to change the layout of a kitchen the ability to update its overall appearance with any one of hundreds of exterior style and color options including glass cabinet doors. You can also customize your cabinetry with expensive-looking, low cost decorative molding and hardware.

MG 9894 Does Anyone Offer Affordable Kitchen Renovations?

Countertops

Another affordable renovation that doesn’t require a complete kitchen overhaul is countertop replacement. Replacing an older countertop with a new one is often enough change to enhance the beauty of a kitchen and make it welcoming and functional. Countertop materials favored by many renovators include solid surface Corian, engineered quartz and natural granite in a wide variety of colors. Typically, these materials are scratch and stain resistant making them a great return on investment years after they’re installed. A good remodeling company can also update other areas of your kitchen to inexpensively match your new countertop. For example, consider installing a matching backsplash or island top.

MG 9872 Does Anyone Offer Affordable Kitchen Renovations?
Islands

If you love the size, shape and storage capacity of an existing island, but hate part or all of its appearance, you can inexpensively have the lower cabinetry refaced, the top replaced or do both. Refacing a kitchen island doesn’t take a lot of money or time and tops on most kitchen islands can be effortlessly removed, measured and replaced with a material that is both beautiful and durable. Another option? Consider installing a kitchen island built to your specifications. The addition of an island is one of many simple affordable kitchen renovations that on its own can change the entire appearance of a kitchen while making the area a more efficient space to work in.

All of these affordable kitchen renovations usually take less than a week to complete. Before you know it, you’ll be showing off your new kitchen to family friends during meals paid for with the all money you saved.

5 Kitchen Design Trends for 2012

March 20, 2012 by Susan

by MeCC Interiors

The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), a non-profit trade association that has educated and led the kitchen and bath industry for more than 45 years, conducts an annual member survey to identify the latest trends in bathroom and kitchen design.  Based on 350 responses throughout Canada and the United States, here are five (5) kitchen trends for 2012.

Brizo's Venuto Pull-Down kitchen faucet with Smarttouch technology

1. Pull-Out Faucets

You might shake your head at this as being far too obvious as pull-out kitchen faucets are not new.  Less than two (2) years ago, standard faucets were used just as often as pull-outs in kitchens.  During the last three (3) months of 2011, more than 90% of (surveyed) designers specified pull-out faucets!  In other words, pull-outs have officially become the new norm and, for many people I know, are the expectation.

2. Changing Woods

Though cherry wood has traditionally been the first or second most popular cabinetry wood – alternating top spot honours with maple – cherry’s use has been in steady decline the past couple years.  Maple, too, is being used less often.  Designers are instead opting for other wood species.  The use of oak, walnut, birch, and bamboo have all at least doubled in specification rates over the past year.

Continuing on a trend cited in last year’s top trends, darker finishes are increasingly popular.  Medium-toned natural finishes follow in popularity, while light natural finishes are much less prominent.  When a painted finish is preferred, white remains the prevalent choice; only 38% of designers specified a non-white finish.  Distressed finishes, which have been on the wane the past few years, have made a notable comeback in finish options.

4. LED Lighting

Energy efficient LED lighting is the clear number one choice in kitchen lighting despite the initial higher cost.  Close to three (3) out of four (4) kitchens now specify LED lights.  This number will likely only continue to rise as legislation throughout the US and Canada has called for the discontinuation of incandescent bulbs.  The timelines of the bans vary by region, so check locally to see what is and isn’t acceptable before purchasing bulbs.

5. Glass

Over the past several years, a plethora of new glass products have been introduced to the market.  Glass mosaic backsplash tiles, for example, can now be purchased at your local building centre, though the higher end versions tend to remain exclusively available through tile stores and to the trade.  It is also being used in large sheets to cover the entire backsplash with fewer (if any) seams.  Despite its gains in the area of backsplashes, glass remains more of a niche countertop material.
